How to Attach Traces to a Pony Cart

Ponies that are trained to drive are a step above the riding only equine. Ponies that are too small to be ridden can be given employment and exercise in harness. Driving is increasing in popularity and can be a great way to be with horses if riding is not possible - for pony, human or both. Traces attach quickly to a pony cart and are the least complicated part of the harnessing process.

Instructions

    • 1

Be sure the harness and cart fit the pony. Place the saddle, breeching and breast plate or collar on the horse. Tighten the girth. Check that the shaft loops are buckled.

    • 2

Ask the pony to back into the cart so that the tips of the shafts are resting alongside the shoulder. Slip the shaft through the already buckled shaft loops or tugs.

    • 3

Wrap the harness straps around the shaft several times (this strap hangs from the back band and attaches the shaft to the breeching). Buckle the strap to its keeper on the breeching.
