Snap buckles are cast from steel and are intended for quick release and attachment. These buckles are generally used in farming or logging for practical use and ease of handling. Some of these buckles are attached to a chain trace instead of the pleasure driving leather trace.
Buckle

Most harnesses attach with a buckle similar to a belt buckle. These are the typical attachments of horse tack from bridles to saddlery. These steel buckles adjust to various parts of the harness to secure the pieces and to attach the trace to the carriage or cart. They come in various designs but all work in the same manner.
Ornamental and Special Metal Buckles

Brass, zinc alloy and bronze buckles work the same as the steel buckles but are sometimes cast in ornate designs. These buckles are sturdy and are generally used for pleasure driving, ceremonial or military display carriages. Some of these buckles are specific to different cultures and are special ordered for reenactments or ethnic interest.

Decorative buckles are used on harness for visual effect and aesthetic interest rather than use. These buckles or usually of an expensive metal such as silver or brass. Many of these are antique or designed for a specific cultural display. Military harness also display ornate buckles often portraying insignias. These buckles may be cast or stamped with relief work or cut-out designs to show the leather beneath.
