The Horse Population in Sequim, Washington

Sequim is a city in Clallam County, Washington, whose name derives from the native language of the Jamestown S'Klallam tribe, who keep and breed horses in the region. There are other horses in Sequim as well; although figures are available for the horse population at state level, official collective data on actual numbers at city level is not recorded.
  1. Official Figures

    • According to The American Horse Council, who published the country's most comprehensive horse study ever in 2005, there were 249,964 horses in Washington that year. This makes Washington the 11th state in a list of states with most horses, with Texas, not surprisingly, coming out on top. According to the 2007 Census of Agriculture, there were 1,170 horses and ponies on farms in the whole of Clallam in 2007. The census does not give figures for individual cities in Clallam, nor does it tell us the number of horses in Clallam that are not on farms.

    Gem Hill Farm

    • Gem Hill Farm is a small breeding farm located west of the Dungeness River between Sequim and Port Angeles. Gem Hill breeds horses of true Morgan "conformation, disposition and versatility," as well as Anglo Morgan Crosses. The farm's stallion, Gem Hill Gem Master, born in 1998, is a true Gold Palomino with old bloodlines that the farm has meticulously recorded. They also have four mares, namely Julianne Mac, Gem Hill Saffire Lady, Gem Hill Desert Rose and Gem Hill Lady Porsche. Gem Hill Lucky Charm, born in 1997, is the farm's first Anglo Morgan cross.

    Nodaway Farm

    • Sequim's Nodaway Farm, situated about 90 minutes from Seattle, on Washington State's Olympic Peninsula, describes itself as "quality retirement, layup and vacation care for horses." The farm cares for horses recovering from injury or the stresses and strains of competition. Rehabilitation, relaxation and play are the order of the day for horses at Nodaway. The horse population there is more transient than at a breeding farm, since horses come for brief periods of rest and vacation boarding.
