Check the floorboards. Lift the rubber mat on the floor of the horse trailer to check the floorboards underneath. The most dangerous thing for a horse is to stand on unsecure flooring, especially if made from timber. Replace any timber floorboards if they are showing signs of wear and tear or are beginning to rot. Use a screwdriver and press down on the wood to check for rot. Any soft spots you find are rotten wood. Replace the floorboards with a high-quality hardwood. Check the trailer sides and underbody for potential problems areas.

Check the tires for any wear and tear. Check they are at the correct pressure. Remember to check the spare tire also. If any tires need replacing, ensure that they are refitted correctly and well tightened.

Replace any faulty bulbs. Run new wiring through the trailer if there is a problem with the wiring.

Open all doors and windows so the trailer is well-ventilated. Remove all bedding and mats. Power wash the whole trailer and then use a wire brush scrub away any dirt or debris with warm water and dish washing liquid. Power wash the detergent away and then leave the trailer to dry. Replace old bedding.

Grease the wheel bearings. This should be done at least once every two years. Park the horse trailer in a covered area if you are not going to use it very often. This will protect it from the elements and reduce general wear and tear.
