How to Unhook a Horse Trailer

If you own a horse, chances are that at some point you will have to transport the animal either to the vet or possibly to show. The best mode of transportation is by horse trailer. These specially designed trailers allow your horse to stand comfortably while riding and give you the option of leaving the side vents up or down to give the aniamal fresh air and light. Once you have completed your journey, proper unhooking and storage of your trailer is essential to prolonging its life.

      Park your trailer on level surface. Turn off the engine and step out of your vehicle.

      Stack the three cinder blocks under the tongue of the trailer. Once the trailer is disconnected, you will be able to rest the tongue on these blocks for storage.

      Disconnect the trailer's electrical wiring harness running between your vehicle and the trailer.

      Unlock any antitheft device you have on your trailer tongue. Most trailer drivers use a master lock to make the trailer hitch inoperable when locked.

      Squeeze the release trigger on the trailer's tongue and lift it to the up position. This will release the ball on your vehicle from the trailer hitch.

      Disconnect the trailer's safety chains from your vehicle. These chains run from the center of the trailer's tongue to the chain holders on your vehicle's tow package. In case of an emergencey while driving, the chains will prevent the trailer from getting away from you.

      Lift the trailer tongue off the ball hitch of your vehicle and rest it on top of the cinder blocks.

      Close and relock your trailer's coupler end. Your trailer is now unhooked and stored properly.
