How to Use Crushed Lime in Horse Stalls

Crushed, or ground, lime is an inexpensive and beneficial product used in horse stalls under the bedding. It absorbs odors and soaks up moisture, providing a clean-smelling environment for our equine companions. However, lime can be caustic, so you should cover it with bedding and not leave it exposed so that your horse has to stand directly on it or get it on its skin. Using lime is not a replacement for cleaning the stall with regularity.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the horse from the stall or tie it in one corner while you work in another area. Once you have finished in one area you can move the horse to the clean area and finish the rest of the stall.

    • 2

Clean out the bedding and manure completely.

    • 3

Put on your gloves. Sprinkle the lime thinly across the floor.

    • 4

Add extra lime to wet areas where moisture has gathered. Wait a couple moments for the lime to absorb into the puddle, then use your broom to scrub the area. This will keep the lime from caking in one area. Sprinkle more lime in the area.

Bed the entire stall down with your regular bedding material.
