How to Make a Crossover Lariat Strap

A crossover rope strap is one of several ways of attaching a lariat to your saddle. The rope strap holds the rope securely when not in use, is easy to release when the rope is needed and breaks away if the rope snags on a tree or fence, keeping it from entangling and injuring horse or rider. The crossover style uses a buckle for fastening; the strap mounts on one side of the horn and fastens on the other. If your saddle is not already equipped with the crossover buckle, you may want to choose another style of strap.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure about 2 inches up from the jockey seat and the same from the front of the swell. This is the approximate position for mounting your crossover, although it may be adjusted to suit your personal tastes.

    • 2

Position the concho over the area you have chosen to secure the strap.

    • 3

Fasten the concho to the swell using the screw. Be sure you drive the screw in straight to avoid chewing up the leather.

    • 4

Pass the base end of the strap (that is, the end not meant to pass through the buckle) through the slit in the concho. You may secure it with a Chicago screw by slitting the end of the strap and looping it back through itself, or by simply tying it.
