How to Build a Wooden Saddle Rack

A high quality saddle can be expected to last a lifetime, but not if it is stored improperly. A saddle rack can keep a saddle from being damaged. Wooden saddle racks are simple yet efficient, and are long lasting. They can be built with materials from your local hardware store and lumber yard.

Instructions

    • 1

Nail one of the 4x4s directly in the center of one of the 18-inch 2x10s, creating a ̶0;T̶1; shape, then repeat the process with the other 4x4 and 18-inch 2x10. These will form the front and back of your saddle rack.

    • 2

Turn the front and back pieces upside down. The 4x4 should face the inside when you turn them to face one another. Connect the front and back of the saddle rack by nailing the two 24-inch 2x10s to either side of the short part of the ̶0;T.̶1; Your saddle rack should resemble a bottomless box with two posts sticking up, one on either side.

    • 3

Flip the saddle rack over and nail plywood to create a bottom for your box. Use a saw to make sure the bottom of the box fits the saddle rack precisely without creating any gaps or overhangs. This creates a storage area for grooming supplies or other gear.

    • 4

Flip the saddle rack back over. Nail the 24-inch 2x6 board to the tops of the two 4x4s to connect them. Make sure the 2x6 is centered.

    • 5

Sand down all rough edges. Paint the saddle rack if desired. Attach a hook to the front of the saddle rack for storing your bridle.
