Horse show judging is a precise and complicated process which requires individuals to have experience and education. Judges are expected to know the qualities of specific breeds as well the different aspects of various disciplines and the individual qualities and specifications represented within those disciplines. There is no formal standard or organization certifying horse show judges. Individuals wishing to become a horse show judges have to apply with the organizations of their choosing and meet whatever standards the organization has set for judges.

If you want to become a judge and need to gather a broad base of information, an online-based equine education program would be a good step in the right direction.

      Apply to the organization of your choice. The American Quarter Horse organization, the largest breed registry in the United States, offers an online application. However, judges are expected to attend and pass a qualification exam, provide photographs for identification, become a member of the organization, list their experience and provide letters of reference. Application fees are required.

      Complete all necessary specifications required by breed organization. These may include completing organization specific classes, passing exams, or working as a judge's assistant for a certain number of shows.
