Jodhpurs
-
Jodhpurs are riding pants cut a bit loosely about the hips but fitted through the lower leg to allow the rider to better connect with the horse. While the looseness at the hips has been reduced since they first appeared, the cut still aids ease of movement and comfort. Look for jodhpurs made from flexible and stretchy materials such as Lycra and spandex. For the best ride, equip children with jodhpurs that include grip patches at both the knees and the seat, along with stirrups to keep the pants in place. While typically worn in shades of white, particularly for competitions, jodhpurs are available in a variety of colors. Note that breeches are slightly different than jodhpurs as they do not reach the ankle and should not be worn with tall boots.
Riding Boots
-
An essential component of equestrian clothing, the riding boot is designed for stirrups and contributes greatly to a child's safety. Parents should look for boots that feature a stout heel to keep the rider's feet in place. Purchase long, English equestrian riding boots for your child to wear if they are competing or training to race or jump. This type of boot protects the leg, offers more comfort during longer rides and includes spurs. The short version of this boot is occasionally seen in competitions but mainly serves as a dressage boot; the shortness provides a more flexible fit. Paddock and muck boots can be used for everyday stable errands and pleasure rides; these are sometimes made with rubber instead of leather. Buy these if cost is an issue as children often outgrow their boots quickly. Western or cowboy boots may feature a more substantial heel and tend to be more decorative.
Riding Helmets and Hats
-
Pay special attention to the hat or helmet as it is plays a pivotal role in safety. A helmet offers protection to the child's head in the event of a fall or collision with a low-hanging object. A range of hats and helmets are available from jumping to polo, so consider the type of riding the child will be doing before determining the appropriate gear. The most important detail to look for is the safety stamp, which confirms that the helmet or hat has passed the test for safety regulations. In the United States, make sure SEI or ASTM is stamped on the hat. If you're purchasing a hat or helmet from abroad, be sure that the appropriate safety stamp for the country is there.
