How to Install Stall Mats

Stall mats are flat pieces of flexible rubber that are placed on the floor of a barn stall for animals to stand on. The rubber mat provides a layer of cushion between the animal's feet and the hard floor of the stall. This lessens the pressure on the animal's joints and provides a softer place to lay down. Stall mats can be installed on surfaces made of asphalt, concrete or wood.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all existing hay and other bedding material from the stall using a pitchfork or shovel. It is not necessary to wash down the stall before installing the stall mat.

    • 2

Place a tape measure at one end of the stall and stretch it across the stall to determine length. Repeat the process to measure the width of the stall.

    • 3

Lay the stall mat out on the ground and use the tape measure to transfer the stall measurements onto the mat with a marker. Reduce the width and length measurements by 1/4 to 1/2 inch to allow the rubber to expand and contract.

    • 4

Cut off the excess areas of the stall mat using a utility knife. Run the knife over the lines two to three times to cut all the way through it, if necessary.

    • 5

Pick up the stall mat and place it into the stall. Use the utility knife to trim any uneven corners to make them fit.

    • 6

Place new bedding material on top of the stall mat.
