How to Use Equine Mirrors Indoors

Mirrors are an excellent tool for a horse farm. A horse owner can use mirrors for many reasons, from stable management to riding instruction. Horses are social creatures, and being alone stresses them. Mirrors can help horses feel like they're not alone. Knowing how and where to use mirrors is the key.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the use for your mirrors. This will help you decide whether to mount them permanently.

    • 2

Mount the mirrors on the wall next to the riding area if you will be using them to assist in training riders. The mirrors will need to be mounted close together to provide as nearly a seamless picture as possible. They will also need to be very securely mounted with screws to a permanent wall.

    • 3

Place a safety bar at least one foot away from the mirrors and extend the bar all along the length of the mirrored wall.

    • 4

To entertain a stabled horse, securely mount the mirror on the wall behind or next to the horse's stall. You will need to cover it with bars or safety wire to prevent the horse from being able to make contact and break it.

Catching a horse's attention for photos is another use for indoor mirrors. When the horse is groomed and in position, a stablehand will hold a mirror up close enough so the horse can see itself and think it is another horse. Ears will come forward and the photographer can get a good picture.
