Instructions to Build a Saddle Rack

A saddle rack is an inexpensive way to store your saddle properly and keep the tree, horn, or the cantle of the saddle from being damaged. It also allows for the padding on the bottom to dry out after a long ride to prevent it from molding. The saddle rack should be tall enough that when the saddle is placed on the rack, the stirrups do not touch the ground. A shelf can be added under the saddle for extra storage of brushes or blankets.

Instructions

  1. Preparation

    • 1

Mark one of the 1" X 12" X 36" boards as "A" (front) and one as "B" (back).

    • 2

Cut off the top corners of "A": Measure 3 inches along the top 12" side from the left toward the center and mark the point. Measure 4 inches down the left 36 inch side from the top and mark the point. Draw a line to connect these two points. This is where you will cut to trim off the corner. Cutting off the corners allows the saddle to sit easily on top of the stand since the saddle is an inverted "V" shape. Repeat for the right side.

    • 3

      Repeat step 2 for "B".

    • 4

Mark four of the 1" X 6" x 24" boards as "C". These are the side pieces.

    • 5

Mark one of the 1" X 6" x 24" boards as "D". This is the top where the saddle will sit.

    Construction

    • 6

Lay "A" and "B" on edge 24 inches apart. Place one "C" across the 1 inch side of both "A" and "B". Be sure that "C" is flush with the bottom of "A" and "B" (The side opposite of the one where the corners were cut off). Use a drill to drill pilot holes before screwing "C" in place.

    • 7

Use a drill to make pilot holes in "C" before screwing the second "C" across the 1 inch side of "A" and "B" 26 inches from the bottom of "A" and "B".

    • 8

Turn the stand over so it is laying on the two "C" pieces you just screwed into "A" and "B". Use the drill to make pilot holes in both "C" pieces. Screw two "C" pieces into this side of "A" and "B" at the same points as step 2.

    • 9

Stand the saddle rack up so "A", "B" and two "C" pieces are all touching the ground. Use a drill to screw the last "C" piece flat into the top 1 inch edge of "A" and "B" between the cut off corners. Your saddle will rest on this piece.

    • 10

Screw the hook into the center of the front of "A" about 6 inches from the top. You can use this hook to hang a bridle, halter, or lead line.
