How to Tie the Reins to a Rope Halter

Reins come in two basic styles: split--separate pieces--or one continuous loop. The type used depends on what type of bit or hackamore it is used with and the job the horse is asked to do. With a snaffle bit, mecate reins are sometimes used. These are reins made from horsehair or synthetic material, such as nylon, parachute chord or yachting cord. The mecate is a continuous solid rein from bit ring to bit ring.

Instructions

    • 1

Run the right rein up through the halter loop.

    • 2

Place the end of the rein over the top of the loop, directly underneath the knot--sometimes called a "fiador" knot.

    • 3

Run the end underneath the loop, out through the middle and over the long length of rein.

    • 4

Pull the short end taut to create a strong rein attached to the rope halter.

    • 5

Bring the loose end of the rein around to the other side of the halter.

    • 6

Wrap the second end of the reins above the fiador knot. Continue to wrap it down around the coil with the end of the rope at the bottom.

    • 7

      Repeat Steps 3 and 4.
