How to Add Windows to Your Horse Trailer

Windows allow light into a horse trailer, which makes loading more appealing to the horse. Walking into a dark "tunnel" can be frightening for many horses. Windows can also help keep the trailer cool on hot days. Purchasing self-sealing ready mount windows greatly reduces the time and complexity of this project.

Instructions

  1. Preparation and Installation

    • 1

Decide where to place the windows on your trailer. You can add windows on the sides, in the front of the trailer, or both. Purchase self-sealing ready mount windows in the size that best fits your trailer. There are many sizes and shapes available.

    • 2

Draw the opening for the window onto the trailer with permanent marker. Use the window you purchased as a template. This will help to keep your lines straight when cutting.

    • 3

Use a jigsaw to cut the opening for the windows. (The self-sealing ready mount slider windows have a flange of 3/8 inches for greater tolerance in the size of the rough opening, so don't worry if your cutting is not perfect.)

    • 4

File off any rough edges on the window opening. Prime and paint the edges of the window to prevent them from rusting under the rubber grommet of the window.

    • 5

Install the self-sealing ready mount window. As you install the window be sure the rubber grommet is smoothly covering both the inside and outside of the trailer to prevent any leaks.
