Sealing Horse Trailer Windows
Examine the existing seal. If the window is leaking into the interior of the trailer, you may have to remove the window and replace the tape that helps to hold the window in place. If the window is not leaking, but the sealant around the window gasket appears weathered, go to Step 5.
If the window has been leaking, remove the rubber seal from the exterior of the trailer and the screws that hold the window in place. Remove the window from the outside.
Remove the tape from around the edge of the window and clean with rubbing alcohol to ensure a clean surface for the new butyl tape. Clean the exterior of the horse trailer of all sealant by carefully scraping with the razor blade. Finish with rubbing alcohol, changing the rags often to avoid spreading the old sealant.
Take one side of the backing paper off the butyl tape and press onto the flange of the window. Remove the backing paper and replace the window. Install the screws and the rubber gasket.
If you are just re-sealing the trailer windows, remove all existing sealant from around the rubber seal with the razor blade and clean with rubbing alcohol and rags. To re-seal the horse trailer windows, insert the sealant into the caulking gun, cut the tip to the desired size, and pierce the seal with a long narrow screwdriver, long nail or screw. Carefully put a small bead of sealant around the rubber gasket, sealing it to the horse trailer body. Wearing the gloves dampened with water, smooth the sealant. Wipe your gloves often with rags to prevent sealant buildup.
