Homemade Toys My Horse Will Play With

Horses love to play with one another or alone. When horses gets bored, they are much like other animals, they will find ways to entertain themselves. Sometimes they will chew on their stalls. You should provide your horses with toys to play with, especially when they are confined to the barn. There are several inexpensive easy homemade toys that you can make that most horses love.
  1. Ropes

    • Tie several knots in an old rope and hang it inside your horse's stall. The rope should be thick and sturdy. Your horse should not be able to chew through it with a few bites. Your horse will eventually get the knots out of the rope and you can retie them. Replace the rope when it begins to get stringy or you see signs of wear. You do not want your horse to ingest the rope.

    Milk Jugs

    • Milk jugs make excellent toys for your horse. Put a few rocks inside the container and hang it in the stall. The horse will love knocking it around to hear the noise. Cut a slit in the bottom of the carton and put horse treats or oats inside. While the horse is knocking the jug around, some of the food will fall out, giving the horse a treat even when you're not there. You can also place sugar cubes or alfalfa cubes into the jug with the lid off and place it loose inside the stall. The horse will kick the carton to get the treats out. Replace the milk jugs approximately once a week.

    Burlap Feed Bags

    • Empty the feed bag and place it in your horse's stall. Your horse will have fun pawing at the bag and trying to get inside. He will chew it and toss it in the air because it smells good to him. Inspect the bag regularly and remove it once it shows signs of wear. You will probably need to replace it about once a week.

    Hay Nets

    • Pack a hay net full of hay. Place two more hay nets over the first one and tie them in the stall. It will need to be high enough off the stall floor so that once your horse gets it empty she cannot step in it and get tangled up. The nets will allow your horse to pick a few strands of hay out at a time. She will work on the hay for hours. This is a healthy way to occupy her time.
