What are the four speeds of a horse?

There are actually four gaits, not speeds, of a horse:

1. Walk: The slowest gait, with a four-beat footfall pattern. It's a relaxed and comfortable gait for both horse and rider.

2. Trot: A two-beat gait with a diagonal footfall pattern. It's faster than the walk and used for longer distances.

3. Canter/Lope: A three-beat gait with a distinct "suspension" phase. It's a faster and more collected gait than the trot.

4. Gallop: The fastest gait, with a four-beat pattern but with a distinct suspension phase. It's used for short bursts of speed.

These are the basic gaits of a horse. Some breeds have additional gaits, like the "running walk" in Tennessee Walkers or the "fox trot" in Missouri Fox Trotters.
