How to Restore Suede Knee Rolls on Saddles

Restoring suede knee rolls on a saddle can seem like a daunting task, especially since suede is a delicate material to clean. In addition to normal wear and tear from riding use, a saddle can get dusty and collect dirt and debris from hanging in a barn. Cleaning suede knee rolls takes some extra time, but can be done several times a year to help make your well-loved saddle last, and improve the grip while riding.

Instructions

    • 1

Rub the suede gently with a soft toothbrush. This will remove loose dirt and debris, as well as loosen the individual suede fibers that may have become matted down during use.

    • 2

Apply vinegar to the knee roll by dampening a cloth with the vinegar, and rub lightly but vigorously into the suede. The vinegar will clean the suede without damaging it. Allow the saddle to dry in a well-ventilated area to let the vinegar scent dissipate.

    • 3

Rub an emery board across the suede, following the direction of the nap of the suede. Use broad, sweeping strokes to restore the nap and raise the individual suede fibers, thus improving your traction in the saddle.
