How to Make a Black Horse Blacker for a Show

While black horses are renowned for their coats, often the elements of nature can dull them. This can deduct points from the horse during a show or put them in a different class altogether. To prevent this, coat enhancers should be applied before a show to make a black horse even blacker and provide a beautiful looking coat that displays your horse to its peak. This does not damage the horse's health, and will wear off within a few days depending on the product.

Instructions

    • 1

Shampoo and wash the horse two to three days before the show with a shampoo that contains shine enhancer. This will enable the coat to look slightly more black than usual.

    • 2

Place the gloves on your hands and either wear an apron or be sure that you are wearing old clothes.

    • 3

Fill the spray bottle with water. Turn the nozzle to a fine mist to ensure it will even cover whatever it sprays. Wet a small amount of hair with the bottle on the underside of the horse's body, where it will not be seen by the casual eye.

    • 4

Place a small amount of dye on the wet fur. Allow it to stain for 15 minutes before washing it off. Check to see that it did not irritate the skin or it is not the wrong color.

    • 5

Apply the dye to the rest of the horse, working in sections and dampening them before application. Allow the dye to remain on the animal before rinsing thoroughly.

    • 6

Shampoo out any excess dye. Allow to dry completely.
