How to Connect a Spur

Spurs are metal attachments for riding boots or cowboy boots. The attachment has a metal rod that comes out of the heel which is used to control a horse when riding. The spur fits around the heel of the boot and is secured with spur straps which can be a variety of materials including leather and nylon. Some spurs also have rotating metal pieces at the end of the rod.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on your boots. You cannot put spurs on boots when you are not wearing them or the straps may not be at the right tension.

    • 2

Hold the first spur so the U-shaped opening faces your heel and the knob at the end of the metal rob points downward. Slip the U-shaped opening onto your boot just above the heel, where it meets the sole. The two spur straps will hang on either side of your boot.

    • 3

Pull the spur strap without the buckle over the front of the boot. Slip it into the buckle.

    • 4

Pull the strap away from your boot to tighten it. When the strap is tight but not uncomfortable, slip the buckle point into the correct hole in the strap. Slip the end of the strap through the rest of the buckle. Repeat with the other spur on your other boot.
