Instructions
Acquire a saddle tree. This is the framework for building the saddle from. Make sure the tree is made of high quality fiberglass, since this will hold up best. Set the fiberglass tree on a saddle rack so either side of the saddle can be accessed.
Attach stirrup bars to the frame. The bars need to be bolted to the saddle below what is called the head point, a spot at the very front of the saddle. The movable section of the stirrup bars should be facing the back of the saddle tree.
Take the canvas material and carefully stretch it over the tree. Begin at the front of the saddle, known as the pommel, and end at the cantle, or the rear. Pull tightly when placing the canvas on the saddle and secure the material in place with small tacks. Place the felt lining over the canvas and secure it down with saddle glue and tacks.
Attach the skirt to the tree. The skit is the creative part of the saddle, which may be decorated as you wish. Consider placing jewels or weaves in the skirt before attaching it to the saddle. Lace the leather with a lacing tool or by hand to secure the skit in place over the seat. Reinforce the hold with more glue and tacks.
Add the stirrups and fenders to the saddle. These should fit over the skirt on the saddle. The fenders and stirrups can also be decorated like the skirt or be left as purchased. Make any final touches before attaching these items to make the job simple.
