How to Build a Horse Fence Gate

Horses are notorious for getting into things and getting into unusual accidents. They are most commonly injured by fencing and gates in their own pastures. Horse fencing and horse fence gates have to be high quality and made to horse standards. Gates that are okay for dogs or other animals might not be safe for horses. Learn how to build a horse fence gate that is safe for your horses.

  • Heavy duty hinges (equivalent to the number of rails)

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the rails on the ground an equal distance apart. Place the two wood pieces at each end of the rails to connect them together. Connect them by drilling long screws through the wood and into/through the rails. If the screws are long enough to come out the other side of the rails, cut the tips off to make them flat with the rails.

    • 2

Dig a hole for each post that the gate will hang on. Place the posts into the holes and fill them will concrete and water. Allow them to sit until completely dry.

    • 3

Install heavy duty hinges on the edge of the wood pieces, installing one hinge for each rail on the gate. Hold the gate up to the gate post (you may need the help of another person), and mark the place on the post for the other side of the hinge hardware to be installed.

    • 4

Mount the remaining parts of the hinges on the gate post. With the help of another person, hang the gate using the hinges and a drill. Test the gate to make sure it swings open in the direction you want. It should open wide enough for a horse to comfortably walk through and not catch its hips on.

Install the latch onto the gate and other gate post. Make sure the latch is easy to open and close, but not easy enough for a horse to open. The latch should be located on the outside of the horse pasture so it won't injure a horse.
