Instructions

    • 1

Pick a date and an alternate date for the horse show. You should choose a date at least two or three months away so you have adequate time to advertise. Also, check for other shows in your area and pick a date that does not conflict with them.

    • 2

Create a budget. Estimate your expenses and income. Expenses include insurance, awards, judge’s fee, advertising, staff-related costs, equipment rentals, grounds and stabling costs, government-related fees and supplies. Income includes class fees, grounds fees and stabling fees.

    • 3

Check for government regulations. Some states, such as California, charge a drug processing fee per horse at certain types of shows. You may also need municipal permits to hold events.

    • 4

Create a show premium and a class list. Be sure your premium contains the date and start time, a contact name and number, and an entry form with fees.

    • 5

Hire a judge and show staff. Volunteers staff most horse shows. Contact people you know who might be willing to work the show. You can find a judge in your area by contacting local riding clubs or others who have hosted shows in the past. Once you select your judge, send him your contract.

    • 6

Advertise your show in the local newspapers, horse magazines and club newsletters. With permission, you can also leave copies of your show premium in tack stores and at boarding stables. Riding clubs may also allow you to use their mailing lists to send premiums to their members.

    • 7

Buy show insurance from an equine insurance agent. Be sure to shop around.

    • 8

      Buy show awards and ribbons.

    • 9

Open your show office early on the day of the show.

    • 10

Keep accurate accounting records for tax purposes in a binder or folder.
