What is a wattle?

A wattle is fleshy appendage that hangs from the throat or neck of certain animals, especially birds such as turkeys and chickens. They are typically brightly colored and are thought to play a role in communication and mating rituals. In mammals, wattles are most commonly found on goats and pigs.
