Why do carousels have horses?

Carousels feature various animals and figures beyond just horses. Many traditional carousels include horses as well as other animals such as cats, peacocks, giraffes, and mythical creatures. The animals on a carousel are typically colorful and made of carved wood, fiberglass, or plastic. Each animal is attached to a rotating platform, allowing riders to sit and enjoy a spinning ride.
