* Normal resting respiratory rate for a newborn foal: 15 to 50 breaths per minute.
* Resting respiratory rate above 60 breaths per minute is considered abnormal and may require immediate medical attention.
Assessing Respiratory Rate
* Count your foal's respirations for 60 seconds or count for 30 seconds and multiply by two.
* Observe the rise and fall of the abdomen for one minute.
* Take the respiratory rate at the same time each day to watch for consist changes
When to Call the Vet
* Contact the vet if your foal's respiratory rate is consistently faster than 60 breaths per minute at rest.
* Seek immediate veterinary attention if your foal has rapid, shallow breathing or is breathing through it's mouth.
* Other respiratory signs that require immediate veterinary attention are grunting, wheezing, flaring nostrils, or coughing.
