Instructions

    • 1

Place a halter on your horse and lead the horse into its stall. Ensure that your horse's stall is clear of any debris. Attach the lead rope to the halter.

    • 2

Stand near the horse's head. Show the horse a carrot, but lower the carrot so that the horse must lower its head to reach it.

    • 3

Lower the carrot until the horse is bending with its head between its legs. The horse's head can also be bent down to one side, near either front leg.

    • 4

Move closer to the horse so that you are facing it. Offer the horse the carrot using the previous technique, only this time, move the carrot back so the horse must bend a knee to obtain the carrot. Praise the horse and give it the carrot if it kneels.

    • 5

Repeat the previous technique by moving the carrot farther back to encourage the horse to bend its knee to obtain the carrot. By repeating this process regularly, you train the horse to realize it will be rewarded for getting down on its knee. When rewarding the horse, alternate between giving it a carrot and affectionate petting and scratching. In the future, this will encourage the horse to perform the trick with or without a carrot.
