Instructions

    • 1

Use pencils, paper, and rulers to sketch a design for the pony ring you want to build. Making a plan will help you assess the size of the ring, the space you will have to work with, and how much of the building materials you will need to build the ring. You should build your pony ring close to the stable or barn where the pony is kept. A good size for a pony ring will be one that has a diameter of 50 to 75 feet.

    • 2

Cut a piece of rope to match the radius of the pony ring. Use it to make a circle representing the riding ring at the location you have chosen to build on. Decide on a starting point on the outside of the rope circle and make a mark in the dirt to mark that spot. Use a tape measure to measure out about 9 to 10 feet and make another mark. Continue this pattern until you make it all the way around the circle, making sure to leave enough room for a gate to be built.

    • 3

Take a post hole digger and make your way around the circle digging up the spots you marked. Set some fence posts down into the holes you have dug out. You will need to set the posts about 4 feet deep to make sure they are sturdy and secured properly.

Attach the horizontal boards to the fence posts to complete the outside circle around the ring. Use nails to secure these boards to the fence posts.

Take a tiller and use it to loosen the soil inside the ring. Add some sand to the soil and mix it all together. This will improve drainage and provide the pony with better footing.
