How to Make a Tie Down for Horses

A horse tie down is a must-have for horse farms that train horses. By training horses to tie down, they learn patience and respect. The priority in making your own horse tie down is safety for the horse and handler. Locate the tie down in a spot where the horse cannot get hurt by nearby items. Make sure the ground area around the post tie down does not have any holes or items sticking up from the ground that could hurt the horse.

Instructions

    • 1

Dig a hole at least 2 feet deep to sink the tie down post. If you have larger horse breeds such as drafts; use a 10-foot post and sink the post 3 feet down.

    • 2

Center the post in the hole and add cement until it is level with the top of the hole. Let the cement dry completely.

    • 3

Measure the average wither height of your horses and make a pencil mark on the post at this measurement. The D ring should be attached at the height of your horse's withers. You do not want to tie your horse too low or too high.

    • 4

Attach the heavyweight D ring and carriage bolt bracket to the post where you made your pencil mark.

    • 5

Attach the rubber horse tie to the D ring using the snap end of the rubber tie.
