How to Get a Great Topline on a Horse

The topline of a horse refers to the curvature and length of its back. The topline starts at the withers and extends to the rump. The ideal topline is short and strong, with prominent withers that are higher than a gently curving rump. Among horsemen, the topline is a subject of frequent concern, as it has a large impact on the performance of a horse. While a topline is largely determined by your horse's breed type and genetics, diet and exercise can be used to improve topline strength and tone.

Instructions

    • 1

Feed your horse a healthy, balanced diet that is high in protein. A good equine diet should include a variety of amino acids, minerals and vitamins. Alfalfa is an excellent dietary choice for building muscles in the topline.

    • 2

Place your horse's feed on the ground instead of in a feed bag. This forces your horse to stretch its neck and back muscles while eating, promoting a strong topline.

    • 3

Ride your horse regularly, incorporating exercises that require him to walk backward. Walking backward forces your horse to work topline muscles that are generally not used in regular riding. The beneficial effects are further magnified if your horse lowers its head while moving backward.
