How to Hitch a Pony to a Cart

Pony-drawn carts have been used for centuries to carry people and goods from one location to another. Today, pony-drawn carts are still used in many parts of the world to transport goods, and riding in a cart led by a pony is an unusual and entertaining dip into the past. Once the pony is harnessed and ready to go, hitching it to the cart is the final step before you are ready to embark on your pony-drawn cart ride.

Instructions

    • 1

Tie your already-harnessed pony to a post or something solid, or have an assistant hold the pony by the bridle.

    • 2

Pull the cart up from behind by the shafts. Place the shafts on either side of the pony. Be sure the pony knows you're there by talking to him or gently touching it on the flank.

    • 3

Insert the shafts into the back saddle tug loops on both sides. The shafts should be brought up no further than to the pony's shoulders. Adjust the tugs so they are straight on the shafts.

    • 4

Lace the traces between the girth and belly band and through the hold back strap loop. Use the clips to attach the traces to the cart. Clip the hold back straps to the breeching on the pony's flank.

    • 5

Double check that all the straps and the girth are securely fastened.
