How to Train a Horse to Bow

Teaching your horse to bow is fun and rewarding. It requires some patience; do not expect him to perform a bow perfectly the first time. Be sure that the area in which you are working with your horse is level and clear of obstacles. Do not place your horse on concrete or any other hard surface.

Instructions

    • 1

Put treats in your pocket, out of sight from the horse.

    • 2

Place the halter and lead line on the horse.

    • 3

Put one treat in your hand and leave the rest in your pocket.

    • 4

Show the treat to your horse and lower your hand about a foot. Allow the horse to reach down and take the treat.

    • 5

Show another treat to your horse. Move your hand down farther than the last time. Allow your horse to reach and take the treat. Repeat this numerous times until you have the horse reaching his nose down to his chest.

    • 6

Move behind your horse's withers and with a treat in your hand reach under the horse's elbow to his chest.

    • 7

Use the lead line to guide the horse's nose toward his chest. Allow him to take the treat.

    • 8

Repeat steps 6 and 7 until the horse performs a deep bow.
