How to Train a Horse to Stand Still for Mounting & Dismounting

A horse that won't stand still while you are trying to mount or dismount (get on and off) is very dangerous. Your saddle could slip. You could fall and get caught in the stirrup, then dragged. You could struggle to get your horse to stand still long enough for you to hop up, then you can't get your stirrups raised or your girth tightened. All of this, of course, causes your frustration level to rise. With patience, though, your horse can be retrained.

Instructions

  1. Training for Mounting and Dismounting

    • 1

Place your horse so he faces a barrier, such as a wall, fence or corner. You can also have an assistant hold your horse, though this person should only stop the horse from moving and not be holding the horse constantly.

    • 2

Tell your horse "whoa" as you begin to mount. Mount from the ground or a mounting block, depending on what is easier for you. Be sure you are not poking your toe into your horse's side or hitting him with your legs or seat as you swing into the saddle. These acts can be what caused your horse to move around during mounting in the first place.

    • 3

Tug on the reins and say "whoa" again any time your horse begins to move around as you mount.

    • 4

Make your horse stand for a few seconds before asking him to walk off. He should not move as you check your girth and stirrup length.

    • 5

Stand your horse for a few seconds after your ride before dismounting. Take both feet out of your stirrups so you won't get hung up as you dismount. When you slide down, again be sure not to hit your horse with your legs. Make your horse stand for another few seconds before walking back to the barn.

    • 6

Repeat steps 1 to 5 without the barrier in front of your horse, though you can still have your assistant hold your horse until he is standing quietly. In time, when you feel your horse is ready, practice without your assistant.
