How to Use an Over the Nose Horse Chain Halter

When leading a horse, a chain shank can be a useful tool. It is designed to give a more insistent cue to the horse; however, it can cause pain if improperly used. Here is how to properly attach a chain shank over the nose and to lead a horse with it.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach the halter securely to the horse. Make sure that it is neither too tight nor too loose.

    • 2

Run the chain through the left ring of the halter (on the side of the face), wrap once around the nose band of the halter, thread through the right side nose ring of the halter (on the side of the face), and attach the clip to the upper right ring of the halter (near the ears of the horse). This prevents the halter from sliding when pressure is applied.

    • 3

Standing to the side of your horse, begin walking. If necessary, apply gentle downward pressure to the lead. This will encourage the horse's awareness of your signals. Do not tug sharply, as you may damage the horse's nose. When the horse responds to your cue, release the pressure.
