How to Fit a Curb Chain

Using a curb bit, which is part of a double bridle, is a step up for many riders. A curb bit is much stronger than a snaffle. Part of the curb bit's equipment is a curb chain. This chain wraps around your horse's chin and attaches to either side of the shank, or sides of the bit. Proper fit of a curb chain is important because the chain works with the curb bit to help the horse to collect. A curb bit, when used correctly, allows the horse to flex his head downward, which stretches his top line and rounds his back. As the horse rounds up, he collects, meaning his energy comes from his hindquarters.

Instructions

Bridle your horse. Put the double bridle on your horse. Adjust the curb and snaffle bits so they fit correctly in the horse's mouth.

Check the chain length. Just like you choose the correct bit to fit your horse's mouth, you want the curb chain to be the right length. The curb chain fastens to the bridle by small hooks that are attached to the curb bit. Standing on your horse's left side, fasten the right side of the curb chain. Now put the other side into the left hook. The chain should hook with no more than two extra links hanging free on either side.

Make the curb chain smooth. When the chain is fastened on each hook, it should lay flat against your horse's chin. There should not be any part of the horse's skin caught in the chain.

Check the fit. Before using the double bridle, check the curb chain for fit. You should be able to move one finger underneath the curb chain. If you cannot, the chain is too tight. Should you be able to place more than one finger underneath, it is too loose. A curb chain that is too tight will not only squeeze the horse's chin, but it also makes the curb bit much too harsh. A chain that is too loose is unable to work with the curb bit's action, rendering it useless.

Shave the muzzle. Keep your horse's muzzle, including his chin, neatly shaved if you are using a curb bit and chain. It's easy for a horse's whiskers to get caught in a curb chain. This is painful for the horse, so do him a favor and keep his muzzle shaved.
