How to Get a Horse to Relax and Slow Down in Its Gaits

Getting in tune with your horse requires both skill and patience. If you have a rambunctious horse that has the need for speed, approach it in a calm manner to help gain focus. Your horse will sense by your body actions if you're tense or nervous. Adjusting your saddle posture, your hold on the reins and your teaching technique will allow you to successfully create a riding tempo that is comfortable for both horse and rider.

Instructions

  1. Body Language

    • 1

Mount your horse, staying calm and focused.

    • 2

Grip the reins softly, making sure not to pull on your horse's mouth.

    • 3

Sit straight up in the deepest part of the saddle. Loosen the grip of your knees and push your heels down.

    The Half Halt

    • 4

      Canter your horse.

    • 5

Lengthen your legs in the stirrups.

    • 6

Decrease the flow of your back by firming your spine muscles for a split second.

    • 7

Position your elbow directly under your shoulder when holding the reins. This posture causes the resistance from your spine to move down your arm and into the reins.

    • 8

Apply subtle leg pressure and loosen your spine once you feel the shift in your horse. This will cause him to move forward.

    • 9

Practice steps 3 through 5 until your horse maintains a comfortable riding tempo.
