How to Make Your Horse Listen and Respect You

Despite their size, horses will seek proof that you are a leader who will keep them safe and free from danger. A horse will test you if it is in doubt. If a horse has the ability to push or pull you around, it will assume the leadership role and begin making decisions for both of you, putting your safety at risk. To gain the respect of a horse, you need to prove to it that you are the alpha, or more dominant one. Some simple cues and body language will aid you in being a strong leader.

Instructions

    • 1

Back your horse up. Step toward your horse, invading its space and saying, "Back up." Use a crop and tap its chest if the horse is being stubborn.

    • 2

Swing or flick the lead rope out toward the horse if the horse encroaches on your space. Shouting "Hey!" or something else to get its attention will also cause the horse to move away from you. Once the horse is out of your space and is standing quietly, praise it. You will often see a horse chew or lick its lips as a sign of submission.

Lean toward your horse and lower your head, keeping your eyes on the horse. This is an act of dominance that an alpha horse will do when herding another horse who is lower in the herd's hierarchy. Following the horse's body language and mimicking it will send clear messages that your horse can understand.
