How to Fit a Dropped Noseband

Finding the right noseband for your horse is just as important as saddle fit or finding the correct bit. It can make the difference between a calm, responsive horse and an out of control, unhappy horse. Developed by the Spanish Riding School, the dropped noseband is different from other nosebands because it closes the mouth below the cheekbone and under the chin. Some horses find comfort in the stability of a dropped noseband, however, ensuring a proper fit is essential to your horse's comfort and safety.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach the noseband to your bridle.

    • 2

Put the bridle on your horse, but do not buckle the drop noseband.

    • 3

Measure 6 cm above the nostril and adjust the noseband so that it sits 6 cm above the nostril. The cheekpiece of the noseband should sit just above the bit.

    • 4

Buckle the dropped noseband. It should fit cleanly and snug under the horse's jaw.

    • 5

Place your finger between the drop noseband and the horse's nose. Check that you can fit a finger or two between the noseband and the nose all the way around the noseband. If you can't, loosen the noseband. If the noseband is too tight, you may impede your horse's breathing.
