How to Use a Dually Halter

The Dually Halter is an innovative piece of horse training equipment designed by Monty Roberts. This halter differs from other halters in that it has a double noseband and rings on the left and ride side that give you more control over your horse. Using the Dually Halter is much like using a regular halter except when your horse doesn't heed your instructions, it will feel pressure from the rings on the sides of the halter. Many people use this halter as an alternative for other less positive training methods.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach a lead rope to the bottom of the Dually Halter so you have control over your horse as soon as the halter is in place.

    • 2

Approach your horse from the front so it doesn't get startled by your presence and stand on the horse's left side. Wrap the lead rope around the horse's neck and hold it with the other hand while you work. This will keep your horse right by your side.

    • 3

Unclasp the Dually Halter's halter strap to open the halter and slip the double noseband gently over the horse's nose so the two nosebands fit snugly.

    • 4

Bring the halter strap upwards so it rests just behind the horse's ears and then fasten the clasp .

    • 5

Attach reins to the halter if you want to ride the horse or just leave the lead rope attached if you want to do groundwork. To use the Dually Halter to control your horse, all you have to do is direct the horse to the left or right by pulling on the reins or lead rope gently. The rings on the left and right of the halter apply pressure to the horse's nose when it resists your directions, which helps train the horse without the use of crops or whips.
