How to Ground Tie

When teaching your horse, it is important for it to be disciplined. You don't want it to wander or run off when you turn your back away for a second or leave just to take a bathroom break. Just like you would teach a dog to stay, you can teach your horse to stay put when teaching it how to ground tie. Your horse will learn patience and obedience while working at horse shows and even at home. You will need patience and time to teach ground tying.

A halter is the head piece that goes around the horse's head in order for you to lead the horse in whatever direction you want him to go. Place a halter on your horse that has a leather head piece. Connect a lead rope to the halter.

Move the horse back into his original position using the lead rope each time it moves. This should help it learn to wait for your next command. Praise the horse when it moves back.

    • 3

Walk away from the horse to see if it will try to follow you. If it tries, move it back in place. This will signal that you do not want it to follow you. Try moving away in small increments. Each time you move, say a command such as "whoa" or "don't move." Praise the horse when it doesn't move.

Circle the horse by walking around it to see if it will move. Say a command if it tries to move. If it doesn't move and is still standing in the original position, praise it or give it a treat.
