How to Handle a Pushy Pony

While ponies are often considered the best mounts for children, some ponies can be pushy and difficult to handle. Ponies, like children, will usually try to test boundaries, and if their young owners are not capable of dealing with this disrespect, the disobedience will continue and slowly become worse. However, with work and help from adults, it's possible to retrain the pony and make him a pleasure to be around as well as a safe and reliable mount.

Instructions

    • 1

Halter the pony and attach the lead rope. Lead the pony forward on a slack rope. While it may be tempting to use a nylon web halter, a rope halter will give more control.

    • 2

Shake the rope toward the pony if the animal tries to come forward and enter your space. Shake it until your pony steps back. When he has taken a step back, praise him, then begin leading him forward again. Repeat shaking the rope each time the pony begins to get too close. Do not walk directly in front of the pony but a little to the side.

    • 3

Turn the pony in several directions. Be prepared to shake the rope toward him each time he gets too close. Tap him lightly on the shoulder with the crop if shaking the rope doesn't work.

Vary your routine by adding frequent stops saying "whoa" as you do so. Square the pony up each time that you stop and insist that he stand still. By enforcing proper behavior while leading and stopping, your pony's manners will soon improve.
