How to Tie a Team of Pack Horses

The biggest advantages of horse packing are freedom and distance. The key is to have a strong team of horses that work well together. With novice and seasoned horses alike, tying your pack horses together properly allows for a safe and organized trip. Unridden horses are often used as pack horses and need to be tied in a specific fashion to create ease and teamwork for the team.

Instructions

    • 1

Gather your horses in a closed area. Lead the least experienced pack horse to the front of the pack.

    • 2

Stand behind this horse and off to an angle so you do not get kicked. Grasp the tail of the horse and find the end of its tail bone.

    • 3

Place the rope against the back of the tail at the end of the horse's tail bone. Sandwich the rope by folding the tail back on itself.

    • 4

Wrap the rope clockwise around the folded tail three times. Keep the lead rope right next to the tail bone.

    • 5

Slip the long end of your lead rope through the wrapped rope to create a snug knot.

    • 6

Tie loose lead rope to the no-pull attachment under the chin of the halter on the next pack horse. Repeat step 2 through 5 until all your horses are tied in a line.
