Buying a fish seems like the answer to every pet weary parents̵7; worst nightmare: pet ownership. Cats and dogs require so much attention, training, cleaning, walking and work to own and many parents can̵7;t handle the added responsibility of owning a high maintenance animal, which is why they opt to give their kids a fish. Thinking it's easier to care for a tiny fish in an aquarium is a common misconception. However, despite the work it takes to care for a fish, they're less maintenance than other animals and therefore it isn̵7;t as big of a deal when the aquarium needs a good cleaning, even if it means removing that stubborn plastic piece at the top.

Check to see if you can simply pry the plastic top off with your hands by lifting it up. Older tanks offer this capability while newer tanks require more work.

Pry a knife or razor blade underneath the edges of the plastic top to loosen it. Run the knife or blade around the entire circumference of the plastic piece.

Pull the plastic top off after you loosen it with a knife. The top should slide easily off but sometimes you may need to pull it a few times before it successfully comes off the aquarium.
