How to Make Multi-Levels in a Fish Tank

Fish can add life to your home without the effort that larger pets require. However, a standard fish tank may do little to capture your guests' attention. To make your tank unique, you can use acrylic to customize it with multiple levels.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut four small blocks from one of the acrylic sheets, using the table saw. These will be glued to the corners of you fish tank where you want your second level to be. If you plan to add a lot of weight to your second level, like gravel or ornamentation, cut larger blocks to hold the weight.

    • 2

Sand the edges of the acrylic blocks with the sandpaper.

    • 3

Clean the acrylic blocks and your fish tank. Even the slightest smudge can reduce the integrity of the acrylic cement.

    • 4

Glue the acrylic blocks into the corners of your tank where you want the second level to be. If you're using an acrylic tank, standard acrylic cement is ideal. If your tank is made of glass, you will need specialized glue.

    • 5

Wait until the cement is dry and the bond is secure. It may take as long as a week to seal completely.

    • 6

Cut the second acrylic sheet the same size as the top of your tank and cut an opening into the side of it. This can be any size or shape you want, as it will give the fish access to the second level.

    • 7

Sand the edges of the acrylic sheet and place it in the tank, on top of your four blocks. It should sit comfortably and can be easily removed when you need to clean the tank.

    • 8

Fill the tank with water. If the acrylic bond is secure, the blocks won't move and your fish tank will have two levels for your fish to enjoy.
