Cover the bottom of the aquarium with clean gravel and place your aquarium decorations around the bottom. If your filter instructions indicate it should be placed on the aquarium floor, ensure it is covered thoroughly with gravel before proceeding.
Fill the rest of the aquarium with room temperature water. The water should reach a half inch from the top of the tank.
Add water conditioner to the water according to package instructions.
Place the water heater in the aquarium according to package instructions.
Place your aquarium thermometer in the tank.
Turn on the water filter and heater according to package instructions.
Allow the aquarium equipment to run until the water has reached the best temperature for the types of fish you plan on keeping in your aquarium. Then you can add your new pets to their home.
