How to Grow Dwarf Riccia

Dwarf riccia is a plant that was first brought to the aquarium scene in the early 2000s at the famous Takashi Amano's Nature Aquariums. To use the riccia, the plant must be anchored because it is naturally floating. The plant grows through the mesh's fabric and becomes bushy and interlaced. Once it is secure to the bottom of the tank, maintenance is simple. The plant tends to grow in the same shape as the object to which it is attached.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the string on the body sponge so that it can then be unraveled. Spread the riccia evenly over the stone in a thin layer.

    • 2

Wrap the mesh around a rock. Pull it without ripping the fibers. Tie the back into a knot. Tie fishing line around the knot for extra security.

    • 3

Trim off excess mesh at the back. Place the riccia in the aquarium. Ensure the plant has ample light and there is aquatic life to provide carbon dioxide.

    • 4

Turn off the filter. Trim the plant monthly for aesthetics, as it can become splayed. A trim will help keep a uniform look and it will allow the lower sections of the plant to receive light and carbon dioxide.
