Select which type of sand you want to use in your aquarium. There are several different options availalble depending on certain factors. You will have to consider how you want your sand to look as well as how much you are willing to spend. Certain sands are healthier than others for your fish and some types of sand, like Black Beauty sand, will affect the chemistry of the fish tank. Other types of sand require more maintenance, something that any fish owner needs to be aware of.
Set up the sand in your aquarium. A key step here is cleaning the sand. Pour your sand into a bucket and spray it until the bucket is full. Remove any dirt that rises to the surface. Once you place the sand in the tank, wait for it to completely settle before you turn any filters on to avoid damaging your tank̵7;s equipment. If you choose live sand for your aquarium, do not clean it before placing it in the tank as it may cause damage to the organisms living in the sand.
Vacuum your sand every 2 to 4 weeks to remove any filth that collects on the surface. To keep from accidently vacuuming up your sand, keep the vacuum about half an inch from the surface. You should also churn your sand about once a month to release any gas buildups that may form in the sand. Make sure you turn off your filter before performing any maintenance.
