How to Clean Fish Tank Ornaments With a Bleach Solution

Fish tank ornaments can become coated with algae after a month of soaking in your aquarium. The algae grows due to light and a high nutrient content in the water. Bleach is a common solution to restoring the ornaments' color and appeal. The rate in which the algae forms depends on the amount of food you're putting in the tank, as overfeeding can cause the water to become overloaded with nutrients.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the ornaments from the fish tank. Be careful not to disturb the fish.

    • 2

Mix nine parts warm water with one part bleach. Place the ornaments inside the mixture. Algae will start to disappear within five minutes.

    • 3

Remove the ornaments after approximately 15 minutes. Rinse them with a hose for approximately two hours, according to Instant Reef.

    • 4

Place the ornaments into a sink and run water over them for approximately two hours as an alternative to the hose, if they will fit. Rotate the ornaments occasionally to distribute the water.

    • 5

Dispose of the bleach water into a sanitary sewer. Carry the ornaments back to the tank in a container to avoid bleaching the floor.
