How to Siphon a Durso Standpipe

A Dursco standpipe attaches to the back of an aquarium's ̶0;hang-on back̶1; filtration system. The standpipe has an elbow with a second pipe that sticks out of the filter housing. The pipe acts as an overflow valve. You can siphon water out of the Dursco standpipe if the trickle filler in the tank overflows the filtration system. You can use a standard siphon hose to make this task easier.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the siphon hose into the exposed end of the standpipe. If necessary, apply a bit of duct tape around the end of the pipe to seal the siphon hose.

    • 2

Place the other end of the siphon hose in a bucket to catch the water that comes out of the standpipe.

    • 3

Squeeze the siphon bulb connected to the siphon hose to create suction inside the hose. Continue to squeezes the bulb until water flows out of the siphon hose and into the bucket.

    • 4

Disconnect the siphon hose from the standpipe once water stops flowing out. When water stops flowing out, it indicates that the filter housing is empty.
